How to check your dog's mouth and teeth

Regularly checking your dog's teeth is key to spotting and preventing health issues. Make it a positive experience, and don't be afraid to take a break or try again another day if your dog seems tired. With a little practice, you'll be able to do a thorough check in under a minute.

A few simple steps

1. Start by looking at the outside of the teeth on one side at a time. Gently lift your dog's lips to get a good view, working your way back towards the molars. Don't forget to check the smaller front teeth in both the upper and lower jaws.

2. Checking the inside of the teeth can be trickier as it requires your dog to open wide. This area is also less critical for inspection, as tartar and gum disease are typically most visible on the outer surfaces.

What to look out for:

Plaque and tartar

Just like in humans, plaque (a sticky film) and tartar (hardened plaque) build up on your dog's teeth. Tartar is usually brown and often appears where the teeth meet the gums. A little bit can be harmless, but excessive tartar can lead to gum problems and even tooth loss.

Gum health

Healthy gums are typically bright pink. However, some dogs naturally have darker pigmentation, making colour changes harder to spot. Look for any redness or swelling, particularly along the gum line. If you notice mild inflammation, try brushing gently. If the redness persists, consult your vet.

Loose or damaged teeth

If you notice any loose teeth, see your vet promptly, as this can be very painful for your dog. Similarly, report any chipped or damaged teeth, as these can also cause discomfort and require treatment.

Bad breath

Slightly bad breath might not be a concern, but be alert to any persistent, unpleasant odour, which could indicate an underlying issue.

How often should I check?

If you brush your dog's teeth daily, you'll naturally get a good overview of their mouth during this routine. If daily brushing isn't possible, aim to check their mouth once a week.
