What to do if your puppy damages a milk tooth

Accidents happen, and sometimes a puppy can damage one of its milk teeth. This can happen if they chew on something very hard, so avoid letting them bite on hard objects like stones!

Damaged milk tooth

If a milk tooth breaks, contact a vet immediately. A damaged milk tooth usually needs to be extracted as soon as possible. If the tooth breaks off and the pulp is visible, it can easily lead to root infection or an abscess, and there’s a risk the puppy’s permanent teeth could be affected.

A damaged tooth can also cause pain for your puppy, so it’s important they get the help they need. Common signs of mouth pain in puppies and adult dogs include a decreased appetite, reluctance to eat, and unusual chewing behaviour.

If you’re unsure whether your puppy needs veterinary care, we recommend using our digital vet service. As a Lassie insurance customer, you get unlimited calls to the digital vet!
