Checklist: Bringing puppy home

When the day finally arrives for you to take home your little puppy, there are a few things that are important to take away from the breeder. A reputable breeder will often have a full understanding of what you need to bring, but for your own sake it is important to double check that you have the documents and information you need.

First of all, you need to remember that a puppy should not leave its mother before it is 8 weeks old. Make sure the puppy is older when you pick it up.

The documents you need to get from the breeder are:

  • Registration certificate

  • Purchase contract

  • Puppy inspection certificate (which must not be older than 10 days when you pick up the puppy)

  • ID tag information

  • Vaccination information

  • Deworming information

In addition to the above documents and information, it is helpful if you ask questions about the puppy, so you can more easily get to know each other! Good questions to ask include:

  • What food is the puppy used to?

  • At what times is the puppy used to being fed?

  • What has the breeder done with the puppy? Has it tried driving? Has it worn a collar? Bathed? Practised bell clipping? What is the puppy's personality like?

When you pick up your puppy, it is also important to remember to insure the puppy. You can read more about how to choose insurance for your puppy here.
