Cat Coughs
Coughs can appear in cats of all ages. A cat's cough comes from the chest, just as it does for us humans. When coughing, cats often stretch their heads out. Occasional coughing may be due to a blade of grass or similar object being caught in the throat, so it's nothing to worry about. However, recurrent and persistent coughing should be checked by a vet.
Persistent Coughing
Persistent coughing and coughing fits in cats aren't normal, but they're usually a sign that your cat is suffering from another underlying condition. There can be many causes for a cough, including:
Infections
Asthma
Allergies
Heart disease
Parasites
Cancer
This is why it's very important to take your cat to the vet if their cough becomes prolonged. The underlying causes need to be identified so a veterinarian can begin the proper treatment. The vet will carry out a clinical examination of your cat's entire body, which may also include X-rays of the head, neck, and lungs, for example. A blood test may also be needed, as well as urine tests and other advanced investigations to find the cause.
It's therefore important to seek veterinary advice for your cat if the cough doesn't go away and becomes persistent. If your cat also shows general symptoms of illness, you shouldn't wait to visit the vet.
