Sneezing vs. Coughing in Cats
Cats, like people, can suffer from sneezing and coughing. These aren't illnesses in themselves, but they can indicate underlying conditions that need investigating. Knowing the difference between a sneeze and a cough is key, as the causes can vary.
The difference is much like it is for us humans. A sneeze usually involves the upper airways, while a cough typically originates from the chest. You might notice your cat shaking their head when they sneeze, and stretching their head forward when they cough.
To help tell them apart, try mimicking the sounds and actions yourself to see which of your cat’s behaviours seem most similar.
Occasional sneezing can be perfectly normal, but if your cat frequently sneezes or coughs, it's a good idea to see a vet to check for any underlying health issues.
