Keep your dog safe from barbecue dangers
Summer means barbecues and picnics, and it’s lovely to include your dog. However, barbecue leftovers can be incredibly dangerous. Please never give your dog barbecue scraps to avoid any nasty accidents.
Corn on the cob
A cob of corn can get stuck like a cork in your dog's gut. If your dog eats one, your vet may need to perform an operation to save them.
Bone scraps
Bone scraps can get lodged in the roof of the mouth and oesophagus if not chewed properly. Bones from poultry, pork, beef, lamb, and fish can shatter on their way to the stomach, causing severe internal damage. They can also get stuck in the intestines, causing blockages.
Sharp objects
Wooden barbecue skewers are a real hazard. They might taste meaty, but they can puncture the stomach and intestines if swallowed. Also, be mindful of disposable barbecues, as their edges can be sharp enough to cut your dog's paws.
Swallow something inappropriate
If you suspect your dog has eaten something they shouldn't have, contact your vet immediately. Symptoms can include vomiting, loss of appetite or thirst, difficulty passing stools, and abdominal pain. It’s always better to call the vet sooner rather than later.
Remember
Always tidy up after an outdoor barbecue. Leftover food and scraps can be very tempting to a curious canine nose. Keep a close eye on your dog when walking near or visiting barbecue areas and parks.
