What Does Dog Health Insurance Cover?

What's covered by dog health insurance — a package-by-package overview

The overview: what every package includes

Whether you choose Mini, Midi, or Maxi, certain things are covered under every Lassie dog health package. That includes vet consultations, diagnostics like blood work, X-rays, and ultrasounds, surgery and anesthesia, and vet-prescribed medication. Reimbursement runs up to 4 times the official veterinary fee schedule (GOT) rate.

Hospital stays after surgery, inpatient treatment, and aftercare are also covered for up to 30 days after the procedure — things like bandage changes, follow-up check-ups, and necessary medication, not just the surgery itself.

Deductibles and packages compared

Across all three packages, you can choose your deductible freely: 0%, 20%, or 40% — independent of whether you pick Mini, Midi, or Maxi. At 0%, Lassie covers the full cost of insured treatment. At 20% or 40%, you pay that share yourself, in exchange for a lower monthly premium.

What actually differs between the packages is the annual reimbursement limit for illness and accident treatment, and the prevention budget:

Mini: reimbursement for illness and accident treatment is capped at €1,000 a year. The prevention budget is €35 a year — enough for one vaccination or routine check-up.

Midi: the limit is €1,000 in year one, €2,000 in year two, and unlimited from year three onward. The prevention budget is €100 a year — enough for annual vaccinations plus parasite treatment.

Maxi: reimbursement for illness and accident treatment is unlimited from day one. At €140 a year, the prevention budget is the highest in the range, and Maxi is the only package that also covers spaying or neutering without a medical reason.

Surgery costs, by the way, are covered without a cap on all three packages from day one — the limits above apply only to illness and accident treatment, not to operations.

What isn't covered

Just as important as what's covered is what isn't. The following is generally excluded:

Pre-existing conditions: illnesses that existed or showed symptoms within the 24 months before your policy started aren't covered.

Cosmetic procedures: ear cropping, tail docking, and other purely cosmetic interventions aren't covered.

Breeding and pregnancy costs: expenses related to reproduction fall outside your coverage.

For all of this: read the terms and conditions carefully — and ask Lassie directly if you're unsure. You can also reach a vet through the app's telemedicine feature if you're not sure about a symptom.

Filing a claim: easier than ever

Claims are filed through the Lassie app. You upload the vet bill, note the reason for treatment — and the rest happens digitally. If your vet uses an assignment of benefits, they can even bill Lassie directly, so you never have to pay out of pocket in the first place.
