What Is the Best Dog Health Insurance?
Why It's About More Than Just the Price
When Luna suddenly starts limping or Biscuit stops eating, it's often already too late to think about the right insurance. Yet finding the right cover beforehand isn't hard, once you know what to look for.
In Germany, there are two basic types of dog insurance: surgery insurance (OP-Versicherung) and health insurance (Krankenversicherung). Both have their place, but they cover very different scenarios. Which one is right for your dog depends on breed, age, and your budget.
OP-Versicherung: The Affordable Entry Point
Surgery insurance covers exactly one thing: operations, in other words, the moment your dog needs to go under the knife. That might sound narrow, but it's often the most financially significant form of cover. Cruciate ligament surgery, an intestinal operation, or tumour treatment can easily cost several thousand euros.
For young, healthy dogs with no known hereditary conditions, surgery insurance is a solid starting point, especially on a tighter budget. It protects against the biggest financial surprises without the cost of a full health insurance premium.
Health Insurance Mini, Midi, and Maxi: What's Behind the Names?
Health insurance covers considerably more: consultations, diagnostics, medication, surgery, and hospital stays, and depending on the plan, rehabilitation and preventive care too. Lassie offers three plan levels, which mainly differ in their annual coverage limit and preventive-care budget:
Mini covers treatment costs up to €1,000 a year and includes a preventive-care budget of up to €35 a year. It suits dog parents who want solid cover but want to keep the monthly premium low.
Midi offers unlimited cover from the third year of the policy and raises the preventive-care budget to up to €100 a year. It's a solid middle ground for dogs who see the vet regularly.
Maxi offers unlimited cover from day one and the highest preventive-care budget: up to €140 a year. If you want comprehensive protection right from the start, this is the plan for you.
Whichever plan you choose, you can also set your own deductible: 0%, 20%, or 40%. The lower the deductible, the higher the monthly premium — at 0%, Lassie covers up to 100% of costs within your plan's coverage limit.
How to Make the Right Choice
When choosing, don't just look at the monthly premium. Ask yourself: what breed is my dog, and does it have known genetic weak points? Is my dog a puppy or already a bit older? And what would my financial limit be in a worst-case scenario?
Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia. Bulldogs and pugs often struggle with breathing problems. For these breeds, more comprehensive cover is especially worthwhile.
Lassie was awarded "Sehr Gut" (Very Good) for price-performance by TÜV Saarland (certificates SC46092 and SC46160). The underwriter is HDI Global Specialty SE, an established German carrier supervised by BaFin. That's extra peace of mind, built in.
The most important tip: insure early. The younger your dog, the lower the premium, and the fewer pre-existing conditions there are to exclude from cover.
