What Waiting Periods Apply to Pet Insurance?
Waiting periods for pet insurance — explained for Germany
Why Waiting Periods Exist
Waiting periods for pet insurance aren't some sneaky trick by providers — they prevent someone from only taking out insurance once their pet is already sick, and immediately claiming benefits. That would be unfair to everyone else insured and would make the whole system unaffordable.
In Germany, waiting periods vary depending on the type of insurance and the type of illness. It's worth knowing them — especially if you've just brought home a new dog or cat.
General Waiting Period for Illness
For general illnesses, Lassie applies a 30-day waiting period from the start of the policy. During this time, treatment for illness isn't reimbursable. Accidents have a separate, much shorter 2-day waiting period — so if Luna gets hit by a car shortly after your policy starts, that's generally covered.
You'll find the exact terms in the policy conditions. Read them carefully — and if you're unsure, ask Lassie directly.
Waiting Period for Hereditary and Breed-Specific Conditions
For certain hereditary or breed-typical conditions — such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, eyelid malformations, brachycephalic syndrome, or (in cats) FORL — Lassie applies a special 18-month waiting period from the start of the policy. That's because these conditions are often predictable and breed-dependent.
If you know your breed is prone to certain hereditary conditions, that's one more reason to take out insurance as early as possible — before those conditions can appear.
Telemedicine: 0-Day Waiting Period at Lassie
This is one of Lassie's genuine advantages: telemedicine vet access has no waiting period at all. From day one after signing up, you can consult a vet through the app — for an initial assessment, advice on symptoms, or questions about medication.
That's especially valuable in the first few weeks with a new pet, when you don't yet know what's normal and what isn't. Instead of driving to the vet's office, you can get a professional opinion quickly and conveniently.
Bottom Line: Signing Up Early Pays Off
The earlier you take out pet insurance, the less waiting periods and pre-existing condition exclusions come into play. A young, healthy pet with no medical history is the ideal time to start — not once the first symptoms appear. By then, it may be too late for full protection.
