Which Cat Health Insurance Is Worth It?

The Best Health Insurance for Cats — What Really Matters

Cats and Costs: An Underestimated Combination

If you think cats are lower-maintenance than dogs and don't need health insurance, think again. Luna, the outdoor cat, can pick up an infection. Biscuit, the indoor cat, might develop kidney disease. Vet bills don't care what species your pet is.

Cat health insurance isn't just for emergencies — it gives you the freedom to make medical decisions based on what's best for your cat, not your bank balance.

What a Good Cat Insurance Should Cover

A solid health insurance for cats should cover at least consultations, diagnostics (blood tests, ultrasound, X-rays), surgery, and medication. On top of that, a preventive-care budget for vaccinations and check-ups is a real bonus — prevention is always cheaper than treatment.

Lassie offers three plans for cats, which mainly differ in their annual coverage limit and preventive-care budget: Mini covers treatment costs up to €1,000 a year and includes a preventive-care budget of up to €35 a year. Midi offers unlimited cover from the third year of the policy and a preventive-care budget of up to €100 a year. Maxi offers unlimited cover from day one and the highest preventive-care budget: up to €140 a year. Whichever plan you choose, you can also set your own deductible: 0%, 20%, or 40% — the lower the deductible, the higher the monthly premium. Cats can be insured from €3.60 a month — a manageable amount given the potential vet costs.

Cover is underwritten by HDI Global Specialty SE, an experienced German carrier supervised by BaFin. That matters: not every pet insurer in the market stands on such solid ground.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Cats: Does It Make a Difference?

Yes, definitely. Outdoor cats face higher risks: injuries from cars or other animals, infectious diseases, and poisoning are all more common. For them, more comprehensive cover is especially worthwhile.

Indoor cats live more sheltered lives, but they often develop conditions like bladder problems, obesity and its related complications, or chronic conditions such as kidney disease later in life. Here, too, health insurance can save a lot of money in the long run.

When's the Best Time to Get Insured?

As early as possible — ideally while your cat is still young and healthy. Conditions that appeared within the 24 months before your policy starts can be excluded as pre-existing conditions. Insure early, and you usually avoid that problem altogether.

Through the Lassie app, you can sign up your cat in minutes, file a claim, and even consult a vet via telemedicine — with no waiting time. That's not just convenient, it's valuable when you're not sure at eight in the morning whether Biscuit's sneezing is something serious.
