Protect your cat from the cold

Some believe cats can survive outdoors in low temperatures for long periods, but while they tend to retain heat slightly better than dogs, they can still suffer frostbite to their ears, tail tips, paws, paw pads, and toes in cold weather. Snow and ice can also clump in their fur, which they may struggle to remove themselves.

How to protect your cat from frostbite
To protect your cat from frostbite, it's crucial they're allowed inside regularly. If your cat can't decide for themselves when to come in (e.g. if you don't have a cat flap), you must let them inside frequently. They should never spend more than a few moments outside at a time, especially when it's freezing. GPS collars for outdoor cats can help you locate them quickly. We don't recommend leaving your cat out all day when you're at work.

If you don't have a cat flap, always create a sheltered outdoor spot where your cat can warm up whenever they wish. This should be elevated off the ground, free from damp and draughts, and ideally insulated with straw or polystyrene. Remember, a cat that's been out in the cold will need food with extra energy to help keep them warm.

What to do if your cat suffers from frostbiteThe most common symptoms are cold and discoloured body parts, often appearing red or bluish on ears, tail tips, paws, paw pads, and toes.

If you notice your cat showing signs of frostbite, bring them inside immediately and try to warm them slowly. Do not rub the affected area; instead, wrap your cat in a warm blanket or keep them inside your jumper. If your cat's general condition is affected, contact a vet straight away.

Remember that cats face many dangers outdoors. Statistics show that indoor cats tend to live longer, healthier lives. If you still want your cat to enjoy the outdoors, consider teaching them to walk on a harness and lead, or creating a secure outdoor space like a fenced patio or part of your garden. This way, their outdoor time is controlled, and the risk of injury is reduced.
