Teach your dog to lie down on command

The behaviour of lying down is useful in many different situations. Here, dog trainer Lina Lundin shows you how to start teaching your dog to lie down. Dogs respond better to our body language than our verbal cues, so we begin training by using an arm movement to show the dog "down". Then, when you want to add a verbal cue, remember to say it *before* the arm movement. Gradually reduce your arm movement until your dog lies down just to your verbal cue.

To get a dog to stay down, you can use a release cue – in the video, the trainer says "Okay, go!". You can then gradually increase the time your dog needs to stay down before they're allowed to break the position.
