Keep up the house training

It's your puppy's second week at home. How's the house training going? Whether you're seeing brilliant progress or it's a slow and steady journey, we want you to know that's perfectly normal. Every puppy is different, and while some take to it very quickly, others need a little more time.

Be consistentKeep practicing using the advice and routines we shared last week. You can refresh your memory by reading the full article again here or by following this list:

  • Make it a habit to take your puppy out first thing in the morning when you wake up.

  • Try to go to the same spot each time you go out to toilet train, so your puppy starts to recognise the area and scents.

  • Be prepared to stay out until your puppy has done its business.

  • When your puppy is almost finished, you can calmly praise them with your voice.

  • Generally, puppies need to go outside after every meal, every play session, and every nap. Plus potentially a few more times in between.

  • Make sure your puppy goes out for a toilet break last thing before you go to bed.

If accidents happen indoors
If there's an accident indoors, just clean it up and focus on keeping a closer eye on your puppy to prevent it from happening again. Scolding your puppy for an indoor accident can damage your relationship and make them insecure, as they usually won't understand why they're being told off. If they do understand, they might just become sneakier about going where you can't see.
